An oldie but goodie: Perl

Perl is an 'older' script language than PHP. It is available on all Unix systems usually pre-installed. There are interpreters for Windows available too.
 

Due to the power and wide distribution of Perl interpreters on various platforms it is a very popular language for creating all kinds of applications. It can be used to create dynamic HTML pages with database connection, but also to directly access and control hardware modules.
